‘Auckland Straights’ is a script widely used by graffiti artists throughout New Zealand and now abroad. While many regions have their own recognisable handstyles, a local style as dominant and regimented as this was a phenomenon. Kids secretly practiced this in every primary school for years.
This style originated in Los Angeles and was imported to NZ the late 1980’s where it continued to evolve. Broken Straights was my attempt to both preserve and contribute to it. Expanding the script to encompass a complete character set including numerals and punctuation while remaining true to the style was an enjoyable challenge.
